John Gentry has always been drawn to the wild places, he rambled the Appalachian woodlands of his Tennessee home all throughout his childhood and adolescence and became acquainted with the trees, flowers, snakes, and insects when other children were enmeshed in the trappings of technology. John served in the United States Marine Corps right after high school and trained in small unit movement and firearms handling as well as land navigation.

After his time in the military John immediately began preparation for a 2013 “thru hike” of the Appalachian Trail, a trip which he would successfully complete after nearly 7 months of hiking. This trail starts in North Georgia and travels through 14 states up to Central Maine and covers approximately 2,185 miles.
